Beyond 'Expensive Urine': Uncovering the Effectiveness of Vitamin Supplements















No matter how short or brief a break or an holiday seems to be, I'm going home🥹🏠. 

In fact I would legit be ticking my calendar 🗓 in anticipation for any break.

One of the reasons is good food🍲. I get to eat well at home compared to while in school and I'm sure I'm not the only one that can relate🥲. A lot of factors come into play for me tho, the father of them being abundance of stress😥 and the mother, lack of sufficient time😬.

Come on! 🤷♀

Everyone loves a good home cooked meal😋 sprinkled with love as cherry on a piece of cake🍰.


In a bid to stay healthy🥗 and prevent nutrient deficiency🤢 while in school, I take vitamin supplements 💊. I soon realized however that there seems to be a bit of a controversy regarding this😕. 

Some say it's effective and helps you to lead a healthier life in situations where the plant or animal sources of those vitamins aren't readily available. 


Others say it just ends up excreted as waste in the urine without being absorbed by the body – ‘expensive urine’ if you ask me cos I legit paid for the supplement all for it to just leave. 🙄


Personally, I wanted to get to the root of this.


Reading on it and gleaning more information during lectures too, I learnt that how effective vitamin supplements can be depends on several factors like health status, dietary needs and the specific vitamin being supplemented.


For some, especially those with specific deficiencies or increased nutritional needs, supplements can be beneficial and help support the overall health.


Folic acid is often prescribed for pregnant women for the duration of their pregnancy to reduce the risk of teratogenicity and prevent certain birth defects.


Vitamin D supplements can be important for individuals with limited sun exposure or absorption issues.


However, fellow mortals, for many who consume  balanced diet, there is scarce evidence to support the need for supplements as they might not provide any significant health benefits.


To add to this is the fact that the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for most of these vitamins are so low that most times your diet covers for them.


It is also possible to consume too much of certain vitamins and minerals which can lead to adverse effects (this is rare though).


So please🙏, if you're eating well, take a long, or better still permanent break from popping pills into your mouth at the slightest opportunity🥺. 


Don't overwork your liver or kidneys😒 and avoid making "expensive urine"😮‍💨 - the body actually excretes in the urine excess amounts of water solube vitamins like Vit C and B.
