From Innocent Experiment to Medical Emergency: What I Learned the Hard Way

It sounds funny narrating it to othersπŸ₯² but deep down it's a traumatic experience for me😞.   I actually thought I'd die that day...

The Niacin Effect: How I Hacked My Energy Drink for All-Night Study Sessions

Have you ever had friends who, if teasing you paid, would rake in millions at your expense and most likely turn it into a full-time job? πŸ˜‚ No kidding—that's Micaiah and Peniel in my life. Even serious moments don't feel serious with these guys. And yes, they're my study partners. πŸ“šπŸ‘―

One of those nights, we went for a TDB (Till Day Break) study session. πŸŒ™ Back then, I didn’t understand the power of energy drinks. Sure, I knew people used them to stay awake while studying, but I had never tried one myself. I just relied on sleeping well before studying. πŸ›ŒπŸ’€

So, this particular night, I was stressed out 😩 and didn’t get any rest before study time. We had a test coming up, so postponing wasn’t an option. Let’s just say that my toxic relationship with sleep was on full display. πŸ’€ My friends roasted me mercilessly when they caught me struggling to stay awake. πŸ˜… I was literally crying and laughing at the same time. Right then, I promised myself they’d never catch me sleeping again. It was that bad.  I broke up with sleep that night... (Just that night sha, because we fell back in love the next day). ❤️

Anyway, for the next TDB session, trust me, I didn't want a repeat of that. I stopped by a provision store on my way and bought a potent energy drink—Fearless. ⚡️ I even collected a straw and headed to the class ready to face the night. I read and sipped all night long.  Yep, I stayed active throughout the entire night.

However, I noticed something strange the following week when I took the drink again. πŸ€” It still worked, but not as effectively as before. After a few hours, I started feeling sleepy 😴 and even dozed off a bit. Over time, I observed that on some days the energy drink worked wonders, while on other days it wasn’t as effective.

Being a curious person (not a compliment sometimes though), I observed and noted that on days I ate shortly before leaving my room to read,  it worked more effectively than on days I didn't eat so well. πŸ₯± At first, this confused me because the drink contains caffeine, sugar, and glucose, which should give energy regardless of what I eat. But then, I stumbled upon its ingredients and made an interesting discovery. πŸ§ͺ

The drink also contains a small percentage of niacin, which is a key vitamin B involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Basically, niacin helps break down food faster and convert it into glucose. πŸ’₯ So, aside from the caffeine and sugar, the niacin in the drink helps create more energy—especially if you’ve eaten beforehand. Oh, my kidneys!! 😳🩺

Once I figured this out, it was over for Mr. Sleep during my TDB nights. 😎 You’d hardly catch me dozing off or even yawning because I had learned how to optimize the energy drink’s effects. The secret? Eat well before drinking it, and you’ll be as alert as an owl πŸ¦‰ during those long nights of studying.

Of course, Micaiah and Peniel were shocked when they found out my secret. 🀫 But there’s a clause to this: energy drinks shouldn’t be taken too often, especially if you’re hypertensive, as they can worsen the condition. ❗

I've changed now though. I'm not a good friend of energy drinks any longer as they came with a headache as part of the package.😡‍πŸ’« So I had to find alternatives. Now, when rest eludes me, I turn to taking herbal teas, drinking water, also taking short exercise breaks in between reading, also discovered that a well lighted room kept me more alert so targeted that and finally, came back to the sister of Mr. sleep; taking power naps(10-20 mins) does justice like  a brain booze. It's crucial to respect sleep's importance. I've moved on from energy drinks....my new mantra? BALANCE IS KEY!

I just felt like sharing the story and the info behind the ingredients and encouraging it not to be abused or addicted too. 😊
